Digital X-Rays

Diagnostic images of the teeth and surrounding structures obtained using digital technology using electronic sensors to capture and store images on a computer. Dental professionals use these digital X-rays to diagnose and monitor oral health issues, such as cavities, gum disease, and abnormalities in the jaw and surrounding tissues.

How do Digital X-Rays work?

When a patient receives a digital X-ray, the sensor is placed in the mouth, and a controlled amount of X-ray radiation is directed towards the area of interest. The electronic sensors detect the radiation passing through the tissues, converting it into an electronic signal. This signal is then processed by a computer, creating a digital image that can be viewed instantly on a monitor.

Types of digital Digital X-Rays

Bitewing X-rays:

These focus on the crowns of the upper and lower teeth.

Useful for detecting decay between teeth and assessing the fit of dental restorations.

Periapical X-rays:

Provide a detailed view of an entire tooth, from the crown to the supporting bone. Helpful for identifying issues such as abscesses, cysts, and abnormalities in tooth roots.

Panoramic X-rays:

Capture a broad view of the entire mouth, including all teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures.

Useful for evaluating the overall dental and skeletal structure, impacted teeth, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues.

Benefits of Digital X-Rays

  • Exposes the patient to much less radiation than traditional X-rays.

  • Offers better & more reliable imaging results, enabling our experienced provider to instantly detect abnormalities-

  • Immediately transfers images to a monitor so that the provider can review and explain the information to the patient.

  • Digital X-rays are obtained by putting a small electronic sensor in the mouth, and captured images can be pulled up instantly on a computer screen.

  • Images can be enlarged, adjusted, and saved for future reference

  • Offers the ability to digitally compare your X-rays with one another

  • Reduction of waste and other harmful chemicals

  • Digital X-rays can be easily emailed to different specialists if needed, and can easily be stored on your computer.

Compared to traditional X-rays, digital X-rays reduce your exposure to radiation by up to 90%. Even though risk is reduced, there is still a slight risk that radiation from X-rays will cause cellular changes that may lead to future disease. Their benefits outweigh their risk, which is why they are so commonly used. Talk to your healthcare provider if you have questions about your safety, or why an X-ray is recommended for you.
